005. A Hindu Temple At Amb

Amb is a small village located in the hilly region of Khushab District. Centuries ago, it was an important Hindu religious center, and two large temples from that era still stand today. I visited the site on 3rd March 2009 and took some photographs, which you can see below.

Amb is situated at 32° 30′ 30.33″ N, 71° 56′ 11.50″ E. The exact date of construction of the temples is not known, but they are believed to have been built sometime in the 9th or 10th century AD. One thing is certain—they were constructed before the invasions of Sultan Mahmud of Ghazni.

For adventurous souls, Amb is a place well worth visiting. History enthusiasts will also find much to explore and learn. The surrounding area is hilly, and the nearby Soon Valley is renowned for its natural beauty. With lush green meadows and several lakes, it’s an excellent spot for a picnic. The region also hosts many archaeological sites, most of which remain largely unexplored. Just 4 kilometers to the north lies Sakesar, the highest peak in the Salt Range. Sakesar is a scenic location in itself, though some areas are restricted due to the presence of a high-powered radar station operated by the Pakistan Air Force.

It is a little bit tricky to reach here for a person not familiar with this area. So if you ever decide to come, it’s better to take a local person with you as a guide.
