065. An Old Gurdwara In Sargodha, Pakistan.

Sargodha is a big and important city in north-central Punjab. It is a new city; its foundations were laid down in 1903 during the British Raj. According to a booklet, “The Sargodha Perspective“, published by the Commissioner of Sargodha Division in 1975, this is how it got its name:

The district of Sargodha derives its name from the headquarters town of Sargodha which is a combination of “SAR” is a Hindu word denoting a water pond while “Godha” was the name of a Hindu faqir who lived near that pond. With the introduction of canal system, the whole settlement grew around the pond and came to be called as Sargodha. The pond was later one filled up where now stands the District Headquarters Hospital, Sargodha. 

Like Faisalabad, Sargodha was established as part of the Canal Colonies, an outcome of the vast irrigation projects initiated by the British in Punjab in the 1860s and later. The British developed the city as an administrative and commercial center. Due to its strategic location, they also built an airfield here, which later evolved into the most important base of the Pakistan Air Force. Interestingly, even after the creation of Pakistan, the district to which Sargodha belongs was known as Shahpur, named after a town located about 30 kilometers northwest of the city. Despite being a relatively new settlement, the origin of the name “Sargodha” remains unclear.

Naturally, one would not expect to find many historic buildings or monuments in a newly developed city. However, a few old houses and at least one Hindu temple and a gurdwara still stand, offering glimpses of a bygone era. This particular gurdwara is the subject of my present post.

It is located in the main bazaar of Sargodha. I had seen it dozens of times from the outside since my childhood. Despite the busy and chaotic surroundings, its beautiful façade and twin minarets always caught my eye. It was only much later that I realized it was a gurdwara, now housing the Government Muslim High School, Ambala, since 1947.

I first entered the gurdwara, now a government school, on 29 March 2014. My second visit was on 21 December 2016, the experience of which I am sharing here. The gurdwara is situated in an overcrowded and bustling street, but the moment you pass through its large gate, a sense of calm prevails. Inside, you find a spacious courtyard and a double-storey structure with several rooms and a large hall.

I was able to learn very little about the history of this gurdwara directly. However, the building itself is a treasure trove of information, with dozens of plaques inscribed in Gurmukhi, the script used by Sikhs to write Punjabi. For nearly seven decades, these plaques remained unread, mostly due to the language barrier. Thankfully, it seems that no one attempted to remove them; instead, they were consciously preserved, even during repairs. As a result, most remain remarkably legible despite the passage of time.

I photographed all the plaques, hoping to study and translate them later. The gurdwara is located at 32°5’13.78″N, 72°39’53.40″E.

These inscriptions reignited my old desire to learn Gurmukhi, a goal I finally achieved in February and March of this year. Simply by reading these plaques, we can uncover not just the history of this gurdwara, but also valuable insights into the pre-partition Sikh society and their traditions.

To give a clearer picture of the multi-religious character of pre-partition Sargodha, I’ve included demographic data from the 1941 census.

I tried to find details about this gurdwara, which must have been one of the largest buildings in pre-partition Sargodha. However, I was unable to uncover much information. This may be because it is not associated with any of the ten Sikh Gurus, an association that would have greatly increased its prominence among Sikh devotees.

Nonetheless, the dozens of plaques affixed along the veranda and on the pillars offer valuable insights. With their help, one can form a reasonable understanding of the gurdwara’s history and development.

The plaque at the main entrance indicates that the foundation of this gurdwara was laid in 1904, making it one of the earliest significant buildings in Sargodha. It seems that, under the city’s master plan, this site was reserved for a gurdwara, while a nearby plot was allocated for a Hindu temple. A prominent location at a large roundabout was assigned for a mosque. One can easily imagine a scene of perfect religious harmony.

In the courtyard stands a beautiful marble structure that once held the Sikh flagpole. Although the Nishan Sahib, the sacred flag of Sikhism, is no longer hoisted, the tall flagpole still remains. Several large plaques are affixed to the structure, bearing the names of donors who contributed to the construction of the gurdwara, along with sacred Sikh prayers.

While I have transliterated the Gurmukhi text—including the prayers—into Urdu, I have not attempted to translate the prayers into English. Given the depth and complexity of religious texts, there is a greater chance of misinterpretation. I deliberately avoided translation to ensure that I do not inadvertently offend anyone’s religious sentiments.

These plaques provide invaluable insights into the Sikh community of the pre-Partition era in this region. They reflect the community’s deep devotion to their faith and a strong sense of commitment to collective welfare. The inscriptions also reveal the donors’ affection for their family members, details about their professions, and glimpses into their social status. Among the many details, the following pieces of information stood out to me as particularly interesting:

1. Plaque 01: It shows that the foundation of the gurdwara was laid on September 1, 1904. So it must be one of the earliest buildings of the city.
2. Plaque 02: The family of Baba Soheila Sign and Baba Jodha Singh, made the biggest donation of Rs 1,500/- for the construction of this gurdwara. That was a very big amount in those days. Unfortunately, no date is given.
3. Plaque 09: Bhai Jeet Singh made a contribution of Rs 125 in memory of his departed father. He belonged to a small town Nali. My father-in-law also belongs to this town. And I often get an opportunity to visit this old town, also famous for the shrine of a saint, Baba Bundi Sahib. Who died in 1933 and was popular among Muslims, Sikhs and Hindus alike, for his saintly ways.
4. Plaque 36: This plaque gives two important pieces of information. First, the donation was made on September 11, 1933, for the electrification of the gurdwara. Being the most important building of the Sikh community, we can safely assume that electricity was provided to Sargodha in 1933 or just before it. Second, this service was made in the memory of a pilot in IAF Sardar Bhupinder Singh. We all now that Sargodha is known as a city of eagles. So it means that tradition goes back to pre-independence days.

At the end, I would like to thank Sardar Mahinder Pratap Singh Ji of Dhariwal, district Gurdaspur. He is also working and residing in Qatar. He was very helpful in reading these plaques. Without his help, most probably I would have made many mistakes.

I with Sardar Mahinder Pratap Singh 

For me personally, it was a unique and moving experience. While reading the plaques, I came across the names of a generation long gone, hidden in plain sight for over seventy years, yet unnoticed by the thousands who passed by. In a sense, these inscriptions silently preserved a forgotten chapter of our history. Sadly, this monument may not last much longer, as the building is in urgent need of major repairs. Ideally, I would hope to see it preserved and transformed into a museum of our shared culture and heritage, after relocating the school to a more spacious and modern facility.
