125. Gurudwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha: Gujranwala
There are thousands of buildings hidden or simply ignored in overcrowded cities and towns across Pakistan, which are links to an era that ended abruptly in 1947. Mostly are neglected and decaying, and fast disappearing. One such building is Gurudwara Siri Singh Sabha in Gujranwala city, just 50 metres from the Clock Tower on the road of the same name, i.e Clock Tower or Ghanta Ghar Road, in Guru Nanakpura locality. The coordinates of its location are: 32° 9’30.12″N, 74°10’47.22″E. It must have been a centre of activities for the vibrant Sikh community before 1947. Now it is property of the Auqaf Department and until a couple of years ago, it was used as a Government School. Now the school has been shifted to new premises.
The main entrance opens on a busy street and is very impressive in size and design. I came to know about the gurdwara in 2017, it was a chance discovery while exploring the Gujranwala city. But due to time constraints, I did not try to enter the building. However, next year in March, 2018, my friend Mohammad Farooq, happened to visit Gujranwala and, on my request, visited the gurudwara and took pictures of the building from outside and inside as well. I finally managed to visit the gurudwara in August, 2019, but found it closed and locked. The school had been shifted and nobody was to be found to open the locked door. So most of the pictures shared in this post were taken by Mohammad Farooq in March 2018. I am thankful to him for his efforts in taking these nice pictures.
Singh Sabha (Assembly of Singhs i.e. Sikhs) was a reform movement started in the late 19th century in Punjab. Wikipedia provides the following information:
The Singh Sabha Movement was a Sikh movement that began in Punjab in the 1870s in reaction to the proselytising activities of Christians, Hindu reform movements (Brahmo Samajis, Arya Samaj) and Muslims (Aligarh movement and Ahmadiyah). The movement was founded in an era when the Sikh Empire had been dissolved and annexed by the colonial British, the Khalsa had lost its prestige, and mainstream Sikhs were rapidly converting to other religions. The movement’s aims were, according to Barrier and Singh, to “propagate the true Sikh religion and restore Sikhism to its pristine glory; to write and distribute historical and religious books of Sikhs; to propagate Gurmukhi Punjabi through magazines and media”. The movement sought to reform Sikhism and bring back into the Sikh fold the apostates who had converted to other religions; as well as to interest the influential British officials in furthering the Sikh community. At the time of its founding, the Singh Sabha policy was to avoid criticism of other religions and political matters.

The Tower is now situated in a crowded place, and encroached upon from two sides. (08.08.2019.)
This gurdwara may not have any great historical importance, but it stands as a memorial to the times when Sikhs were a vibrant community in the city, forming 13% of Gujranwala’s total population (1941 census), while Hindus made up almost 29%. The remaining population consisted of Muslims along with about 2% Christians. Another significance of this gurdwara is its association with the Singh Sabha, an important reform movement in the Sikh religion.
